The wearing of hats by Masons during their work dates back to the 18th century, when they were associated with the wearing of swords. The wearing of these two distinguishing marks of nobility partly explains the enthusiasm of the bourgeoisie to become Masons at that time. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as it was a common headgear in secular life. Only certain High Grades prescribed specific ritual headgear.
Today, some Rites recommend a particular ritual headgear.
The Lodges of several Rites, including the York Rite and the Swedish Rite, often use a black top hat.

Care for your top hat
- Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture and heat to preserve the shape and color of the felt.

- Store in a dry, ventilated place when not in use to prevent warping.
How to reshape your felt headgear?
Water vapour restores the original appearance of the felt, softening it temporarily. You can then simply reshape it by hand.
How does it work in practice?
1) Boil hot water in a kettle or saucepan to create steam.
2) Place the edge of your headgear over the steam, avoiding direct contact with the water.
3) Patiently shape the brim of your hat with your fingers.
4) To reshape the crown, smooth by placing your hand inside the hat.
