History of the Rectified Scottish Rite (RSR)

The Rectified Scottish Rite (SRR) Is a Masonic rite of essentially Christian essence, in the esoteric sense of the term. It plunges its roots into a previous Masonic system, the Strict Templar Observance (STO), founded around 1755 in Germany by Baron von Hund. This Masonic order claimed to restore the order of the Templars. He began to spread to France by Strasbourg, then in 1774, Freemasons from Lyon, led by Jean-Baptiste Willermoz, adopted it. But Willermoz, disciple and friend of Martinès de Pasqually, and fervent follower of his theosophy, quickly considered that the spiritual and symbolic content of the new system was very poor, and disputed the relevance of the restoration of the Templars. He rewrote the rituals and the statutes, thus creating the regime of Knights Beneficent of the Holy City, which was adopted by the Convent of the Gauls in 1778 and entered into force in the French branches of the STO. It is this "Reform of Lyon" which was finally adopted by the general convent of the STO held in Wilhelmsbad in 1782, thus giving birth to the Rectified Scottish Rite.

The Rectified Scottish Rite Inner Order

Often considered the spiritual heart of the RSR, theInner Order gather the Squire Novice, the Knight Beneficent of the Holy City and, when they are practiced, the classes of the Professed and Grand Professed. These degrees require specific regalia, compliant with the rituals and the Christian and chivalric symbolism of the Rectified Scottish Rite.

If the three craft degrees of the RSR and the Scottish Master of Saint-Andrew who follows them are properly Masonic, the Inner Order to which they lead is no longer Masonic, but chivalric, and practice the degrees of Squire Novice and of Knight Beneficent of the Holy City. The masonic regalia of these degrees no longer refer to the the Craft, but to chivalry, with capes, chlamydes, sashes…

You will find in Nos Colonnes Masonic Boutique the Masonic regalia specific to the Inner Order of the RSR: Masonic gloves, Masonic sashes, Masonic collars, as well as the symbolic jewels of the degrees and the emblems of the officers. You will also find masonic hats, masonic ties or bow ties and lodge tracing boards specific the RSR.

Rectified Scottish Rite Higher Degrees Masonic Regalia

The Rectified Scottish Rite (RSR) is a Masonic Rite of essentially Christian essence, in the esoteric sense of the term. It has its roots in an earlier Masonic system, the Strict Templar Observance (SOT), founded around 1755 in Germany by the Baron von Hund. This Masonic Order claimed to restore the Templar Order. It began to spread in France through Strasbourg, then in 1774, the Lodges of the city of Lyon, led by Jean-Baptiste Willermoz, joined it. But Willermoz, a disciple and friend of Martinès de Pasqually, and fervent follower of his theosophy, quickly found the spiritual and symbolic content of the new system very poor, and challenged the relevance of the restoration of the Templars. He rewrote the rituals and statutes, thus creating the Regime of the Beneficent Knights of the Holy City, which was adopted by the Convent des Gaules in 1778 and came into force in the French branches of the SOT. It was this "Reformation of Lyon" that was finally adopted by the General Convention of the SOT held in Wilhelmsbad in 1782, thus giving rise to the Rectified Scottish Rite.

If the three craft degrees of the RSR and the Scottish Master of St Andrew which follows them are properly Masonic, the Inner Order is no longer Masonic, but chivalric. It practices the degrees of Squire Novice and of Beneficent Knight of the Holy City. The Masonic Regalia of these degrees therefore no longer refer to masonry, but to chivalry, with capes, chlamydes, belts..

In this collection of Nos Colonnes, you will find all the Masonic Regalia (sashes, collars, capes, capes, gloves, belts, collar jewels...) used by the members of the Scottish Masters of St Andrew and of the Inner Order of the Scottish Rectified Rite.
