The wearing of hats by Masons during their work dates back to the 18th century, when they were associated with the wearing of swords. The wearing of these two distinctive signs of nobility explains in part the enthusiasm of the bourgeoisie to be accepted as Masons at that time. The type of hat was not described in the old rituals, as it was a common headgear in secular life. Only certain Higher Degrees prescribed specific ritual headgear.
Today, some Masonic Rites prescribe a particular ritual headgear. In France, for example, the Lodges of the Rectified Scottish Rite and the Strict Templar Observance have generally adopted a black tricorn, sometimes adorned with a rosette.

How to reshape your felt headgear?
Steam restores felt to its original appearance, softening it temporarily. You can then reshape it simply by hand.
What's the procedure in practice?
1) Boil hot water in a kettle or saucepan to create steam.
2) Place the edge of your headgear over the steam, avoiding direct contact with the water.
3) Patiently shape the brim of your hat with your fingers.
4) To reshape the crown, smooth by placing your hand inside the hat.
